Green Screen Magic

I was on set this morning at The Weather Network and wanted to reply to a viewer question on how “green screen” technology works. It’s a great question! While we also have a full set, there are a couple of studios that utilize “green screen” technology.

When I’m presenting the weather, I’m actually standing in front of a solid green backdrop – floor to ceiling. (this picture is from this morning).

The green color is replaced by a digital image—like a weather map—using a process called chroma keying. This technology allows the computer to “key out” the green and layer the map or graphics behind me.

What you see at home is the finished product: me interacting with the weather map. In the studio, though, I rely on monitors to know where everything is and guide my movements. It’s a simple yet powerful tool that makes modern broadcasts possible!
